Crap its down to 306kbps they did say it would be unstable. Yeeeet the adsl guide says its 3.2Meg. It's with Demon Stuey.

I noticed your latency is quitee high as well Biccy. like mine. I think the average should be 50 - 60 milliseconds, mine shows up to and exceeding 200 milliseconds! yours is getting there. it seems with the technology they are using to get faster connections over the same old hardware (i.e. old copper cables) it may causing this other factor I still haven't sorted y problem with Virgiin yet, partly cos it's soooo expensive to call them! still I'm not tied down to them & may find a more stable provider...

Yeh Moog I had the highest ping on COD2 last night. Can't really do anything for 10 days this is the period of instability Demon have specified. I'll see if it has improved after that.

It's a booger isn't it.... I wander does anyone know enough about this to confirm if my theory is correct or nothing to do with it?

What theory would that be Moog ?

Oh eerrr.... my theory... eerr... lol My theory - due to the way the companies offering higher internet speeds on the same lines (that could only originally support 512k or whatever) the technology being used has somehow compromised the latency / ping, that me and Biccy seem to have problems with. Virgin say they have stopped this "interleaving" thing but my latency is the same...? have you any clue Mr Stuey

Normally internet companies all use the same line to transfer your data . so you could be on Virgin and your next door neighbour is with Tiscali and you are both using the same type of line to connect so in theory if you are both on a 2meg connection it should be very close in terms of speed. Nowadays most of the Bt lines are capable of running 8 meg broadband which is not creeping in as the norm so most peoples lines SHOULD be able to cope with 1 / 2 meg broadband no problem but in theory it doesnt and very rarely are people with a 8meg connection actually consistently gettin the full 8 meg.
A good way to see if your line supports 8meg at least ot somewhere simaliar is to head to somewhere like Bt broadband site or any other major internet provider that does 8meg and they will have a compatibilty thing on there where they will check your line to see what it supports.
Things that produce large differences in the speed are things like how far you are from the local exchange and a main one is the contention ratio ( which is how many people are using the same bandwidth as you ) most companies nowadays have a contention ratio of 50-1 but some of the better companies cna have as low as 20-1.
If virgin say they have stopped the interleaving then in theory your ping should of roughly halved at least as they are not sending the packets twice any more.
Sorry Moog im not really an expert so i dont " know " why your ping is so high . My theory is contention and is something like you explained. More and more poeple are upgrading to fast internet speeds and the amount of people using the same bandwidth is basically clogging up the lines and at peak times it will get worse.
One thing you can do is on your laptop make sure you run a adware / spyware / antivirus scan and keep it running okay and do a couple of speed tests at different times of the day if you can and pass them on to virgin and if they poor results have a good moan at them and tell them you want your MAC code so you can go with another provider. It might get them to sort it out for you

According to adsl guide: Speed Test Results Downstream 5,614.3 Kbps ( = 5.5 Mbps ) Upstream 371.4 Kbps ( = 0.4 Mbps ) Acording to Speedtest:

that's confusing Biccy! can you geet a third opinion?! does adslguide not do the latency bit?

After all the conversation on the forum about speed tests I thought I would look into mine as I haven't had many problems, so here's the results Which I think is OK as I live in a tiny town in Scotland that only got broadband about 2 years ago.

Here's mine Only on a 2Meg connection with BT as the local exchange is pants. Have not had many problems though. Just the odd connection loss on GoW

Love your latency! it's normal! only 57 milliseconds! I used to have that when I'm rich, I'll buy my own pipe ;D

Which isn't bad today! On a 5meg connection and wireless 128 WEP encrypted which will slow it down a bit. I'm with Virgin too and have had loads of bother with them lately - my connection has been like this Poor!!
