Did any of you manga-fiends ever see a series called 3x3 eyes?
About a girl with 3 eyes (she hid one under a headband) who had magical powers and was the last of her race. She's on the run from some bad-guy demon types and meets this human boy who she befriends but he dies saving her life (he goes under a bus - nice!).
She uses her powers to bring him back to life, but when he comes back he's like some super-dude with wierd powers who's completely unkillable (not unharmable though. It's just that no matter how much of a pasting he takes, he can't die.)
It was fantastic - used to be on Channel 4 on friday nights about 15 years ago.
The only Anime I have are:
Urutsukidoji : Legend of the Overfiend & Legend of the Demon Womb Ninja Scroll (my fave) Ghost in the Shell Spirited Away Ichi the Killer (Anime version of his early life)

3x3 eyes was amazing. i was glued to channel 4 for that! it was really gorey too. i remember the fight at the end with the huge bad guy and the young guy who cant die. he crushes his head on the stone steps!! like how you mentioned the anime prequel to ichi the killer. you seen the movie? with Ichi in high school? mega violent.

Watched a good filem on dvd last night "The Lives of Other" set in East Berlin before the wall came down. There's a review here: www.bbc.co.uk/films/2007/04/09/the_lives_of_others_2007_review.shtmlbut I would advise watching it without reading the full review. Note it's not an action movie but a fascinating study of how the lives of two men ,one a writer the other a member of the stasi, are effected by events. As stated in the review "...you just cannot help but watch..."

Watched a good filem on dvd last night "The Lives of Other" set in East Berlin before the wall came down. AH, bought this for £4 last week in HMV haven't watched it yet but will hopefully this week. Also got a couple of other foreign films 'Tell No One', a French thriller based on the novel by Harlen Corben, which was excellent and another French film called '13 Tzameti' which looks really good too.

Never saw this tread before.
I love the cinema and pretty much go every week. I will actually watch anything so as you can imagine they is a lot of crap but some gems too.
Not got time to write full reviews but here are a few of the films i have seen recently...
Taken - I thought this was really enjoyable. I think if you like the Bourne films and maybe even 24 you will like it too. Recommend!
Mirrors - Tbh i didn't choose to watch this one and i was right by my first impression. Supernatural horror that i couldn't get into. I found it daft and couldn't stop picking holes in the plot and characters. Thumbs down from me.
The Strangers - Simple, straight forward shocker. No deep plot but i enjoyed it. Been out awhile now so would recommend a rental to give the missus and maybe even yourself a fright/jump. Does it's job.
I also tend to download new releases from torrent sites if i can find the DVD quality screener versions.
I watched the first 30 - 40 mins of Eagle Eye last week. Predictable conspiracy flick that is fun/enjoyable. I'm probably going to catch this all at the Movies next week.

Does it's job. I thought The Strangers was excellent for the first three quarters of the film. Really foreboding, not at all what I expected. But I thought the end really let it down it...won't say anymore. Still worth watching though and considering its the directors first film, very promising on his part.

No not seen it yet. A bit scared I'm not gonna like it. I love Pacino and De Niro and the few minutes they shared on screen in HEAT (one of my top ten films of all time) was electric but I've just heard bad press on this film from day one....
I don't get to the cinema that much these days...its getting so expensive and its generally full of teenagers and people who don't know how to behave in a public space so I generally wait till its out to rent. A real shame cause I love the big screen.
Oh and another thing...to be honest I haven't seen a new film in ages that has really blown me away, really left me thinking WOW. I don't mean that in a snobby way either, I love all movies from intelligent slow cooking dramas to full on chock full of popcorn hollywood moneyfests but I just haven't seen anything in ages that has really got me excited.
Is that just me?

Nothing in the cineams at the mo grabs me. Recent dvds I've enjoyed are: - Michael Clayton - George Clooney as a Mr. Fixit for a big law firm.
- Eastern Promises - Viggo Mortensen as a scarey ice man for the Russion Maffia
- 3:10 to Yuma - I still like my westerns and this had added Russel Crowe, nice.
- Stardust - enjoyable fanatasy romp.
- Daywatch - enjoyed this much more than Nightwatch.
- The Counterfeiters - Not sure enjoy is the right word, but it certainly makes you think what you'd do in a similar situation.
- Them - This was the French film I was trying to remember when we met Unkal
- The Kingdom - which I thought had a very good ending for a Hollywood film.
A mixed bag there something for everyone.

just bought and watched elizabeth and elizabeth: the golden age on hd. both were quite enjoyable with some great costumes and great acting from cate blanchett. the golden age was somewhat spoiled by clive owen as sir walter raleigh - a bit light weight although he can be good (children of men is another great film by the way). although it was hard not to think of blackadder II whilst watching them ;D
letters from iwo jima is another excellent flick.

I would have to agree with you guys about nothing that amazing in the film world of late. (Of course it's all a matter of opinion)
You get all the big hyped films(Black Knight) but once seen and enjoyed they are usually easy to forget.
I think the last film that really gripped me for a while was 'No Country For Old Men'.
A good choice of flicks mentioned above.
Have heard good things about and still yet to see Eastern Promises and 3:10 to Yuma.
The Kingdom - I really enjoyed this too. I thought it was going to be another yanky save the world action flick but it came across smart and meaningful. I liked it's message of understanding why people hate... I wonder how well American viewer saw that?
'Letters from Iwo Jima' was a good film to and really much better on a lot of levels compared to it's bigger budget brother 'Flags of out Fathers'. For people who don't know, 'Letter' was the Japanese version/point of view of the war.
Gotta say i am looking forward to Burn after reading and the big kid inside me won't sit down for the new Bond film! October has not been a bad month really.
I don't know anyone else who has seen Taken yet. I would like to hear some other opinions.

Biccy, reading the blurb about Them, it sounds very similar to The Strangers, is that what we were discussing in the pub?? My memory is awful! Taken is the Liam Neeson one right? Saw the trailer, looked pretty good. I have the Flags of our Fathers/Letters from Iwo Jima double bill sitting in a draw waiting to be watched at home, must dedicate a weekend to them soon. I liked Dark Knight and No Country for Old Men very much but I think pretty much all of the other films mentioned here are on my catch up list.... PS - If you liked No Country you should read the book its even better but also makes you realise what a good job the Coens did on it

i know its big budget hollywood and all that but i thought Dark Knight was fantastic - such a change from the usual airhead superhero/comic adaptations. it was almost like an indpendent movie at times. im surprised it was only a 12a rating as i felt that the dark undertone of violence throughout was quite opppressive.
one of my fave flicks to sit alongside Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End, Bladerunner, selected Star Wars, A Scanner Darkly, Saving Private Ryan, The Matrix, Team America and oooooooooo...loads of others!
Letters from Iwo Jima is just such a better movie than Flags of Our Fathers. i was quite surprised by that considering it tells a story from "the other side". was very balanced.

Biccy, reading the blurb about Them, it sounds very similar to The Strangers, is that what we were discussing in the pub?? My memory is awful! Yes it is the one we discussed. It does look similar to the Strangers the latter isn't a remake is it? Usual horror formula isolate your subjects at night and switch the lights out. I also enjoyed Dark Knight and will probably buy it on DVD. Also thought Letters From Iwo Jimas was the better of the Clint Eastwood directed double bill. Not seen No Country For Old Men yet, still on my rental list. Princess Bride just arrived and after having read the book I looking forward to watching that. Bit behind the times I know.
