I've been listening to hip hop for about 25 years, so I think that qualifies me as a pompous windbag, giving me free reign to mouth off relentlessly, without pausing for breath.
Suggestions for a Hip Hop 101 would be:
Run DMC - Raising Hell, Tougher Than Leather, Back from Hell Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, Fear of a Black Planet Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique ICE-T - OG Original Gangster, Home Invasion Ice Cube - Amerikka's Most Wanted, Death Certificate Wu Tang Clan - Enter the Wu Tang (36 Chambers) Edan the DJ - Fast Rap Cypress Hill - Black Sunday Eminem - Slim Shady LP, Eminem Show D12 - Devil's Night Mr Lif - Emergency Rations Mos Def - Black on Both Sides Non Phixion - The Future is Now DJ Yoda - How to Cut and Paste volumes 1 & 2, Unthugged & Essential Mix (with Dan Greenpeace) Jurassic 5 - Jurassic 5 LP
That'll get you off to a good start; not comprehensive but you've got a lot of fundamentals covered.

Three is a magic number is an awesome tune, mostly trying to get hold off older stuff but the D12 albums seem cool, rap just makes an interesting change from indie n metal...

How could I forget Morris Minor and the Major's classic old school piece, Stutter Rap. A close listening reveals that this formative record was a significant influence on NWA's Straight Outta Compton. No it wasn't, it was just novelty shite.

Anyone into rock, should keep an eye out for an upcoming band called The Virginmarys. They're the best new band I've heard in years and they have a debut album out later in 2012.
From new to old, The Damned are coming to Kendal next month. WOOOHHHOOOOO
