Here's copied text from an earlier post: Tips wise I'd say wander around. Investigate the dungeons/mines dotted about but save before entering. They can be reasonably easy or they can be seriously difficult due to higher level creatures in there. Fast travel will get you around quicker but if you have the patience walk and head to the ruins.
Keep your armour and weapons in good nick. I try to use repair hammers as this will upgrade you armourer skill.
Being hit increases your skill in the particular armour you are wearing. Also this will wear down your armour's rating so you will need to repair it, increasing the armourer skill.
Blocking is much more important so try to get used to it, in Morrowind I think it was automatic (haven't played in a while).
Alchemy is a great skill to have although I don't think it's the money maker it could be in Morrowing. Use it to create basic "Restore Health/Magicka/Fatigue" as these are very handy and you should start to level-up.
If you want achievements, I think the Arena is a good place to start as the first few rounds aren't too bad. I can't confirm this as I haven't touched the Arena yet.
Back to work now but if you have any specific questions let me know and I will try to answer leter tonight. Persuasion is now a minigame and is better than in Morrowind, Lock picking is better too.

More tips...
A good tip for Alchemy is to pick a lot of Fly Amanita... (the red mushrooms with white dots that look like 'real-world' Fly Agaric) its abundant throughout Cyrodil and has a Restore Health property that's very useful for making Restore Health potions.
When you join the Mages guild, you can get free novice calcinator, alembic, mortar and pestle etc. in each guild hall (they are just lying around) so don't bother buying them from anywhere if you plan on joining. They are necessary for making stronger, longer lasting potions so use them if you are planning on learning alchemy. More advanced equipment is available from the arcane university (i think) and some shops in the imperial city...
Recharging magical weaponry is possible via two ways. Either get a mages guild member to 'recharge' the item at high financial cost to yourself or use the soul trap spell with a soul gem (needs Mysticism >25) and then use the filled soul gem to recharge the weapon.
For those that use light armour and want some good quality Elven armour early on - check out the Skooma dealer quest, given to you by a guard wandering around the outside of the eastern walls near Leyawin. You'll have to fight someone who'se got it on but as long as you engage them out in the open its not too hard to take them out with ranged spells.

I've picked this game up and started playing the last couple of days, I think it's fantatic. I think I'm a member of the dark side though becuase I wanted a horse so I took one and got arrested so I resisted and killed the guy which attracted a few more who I killed, when I fell asleep I was visited by the dark brotherhood and joined them
I've also joined the theives guild but, not completed many quests as only been playing 4 hours, tis great and I don't usually like this wort of game

I'm now 14 hours into the game and closed my first oblivian gate, I'm also a member of the mages guild, fighters guild, theives guild and dark brotherhood at the same time. I've no idea at all how to keep friendly with them all as they all have different requirements like kill/don't kill/steal/don't steal
What the heck still having fun and I never even play this type of game usually
I've found a simple way of boosting your Alteration level - cast Protect on your self over and over and over and it boosts it in no time.

Only just picked this up and can any of you guys tell me if you can join multiple factions/guilds without eventually having to chose one or the other? I am referring to Morrowynd as after a while you had to chose to be either a fighter or a thief, not both.

you can join them all but i woul do dark brotherhood and then theives guild before joining others because on some of the missions you can get for those two you can get thrown out of magicians and fighters guild if you are caught either stealing from a member or killing a member without permission

forgot to say that i would get the main quest done at the same time as the dark brotherhood quest line then you can concentrate on the guild quests and the hundreds of sidequests from random npc'c and do a bit of dungeon and ayelid ruin creeping to level up sneak and agility ready for the theives guild and dont forget the difficulty slider if you get stuck

I would suggest that you do a lot of dungeon bashing first as this gets your exp and cash up fairly quickly (only from my experiences and when I got to say level 7 up I then concentrated on the main quest). The beauty of this game is that even after 300+ hours I'm still finding caves and ruins I never seen before.
