hi guys been a while since i posted on here last, how are you all? a question for all you home cinema/audiophile buffs amongst you. im looking into buying an amp or reciever for all my audio needs - blu-ray, xbox360 etc so it needs to be able to decode dolby digital, dts etc and have optical inputs but will allow me to use the speakers from my existing dvd home cinema setup (panasonic) and for around £200. one question i do have is that the bass speaker on my dvd kit uses similar +/- connections to the fronts and surround speakers, yet on any amp ive looked at so far, there is no connection for this - how does that work (a bit uneducated here)? cheers for any help.

Subwoofer answer
From your description the subwoofer you have is a 'passive' one because its attached with speaker cable (the +/-) you mention. Can you confirm your subwoofer has no power cable to the mains?- This means your current amp powers the subwoofer and further leads me to think yours is a passive sub.
Most new/modern Av amps have a digital out put (one single cable that looks like a single phono lead) to send the 'sound' to the subwoofer, this has its own internal amp (plugged to the mains) and powers the sub seperate to the amp.
Hope this helps on the subwoofer question. I don't know of any (Thats not to say there is'nt) newish AV amp that has a passive subwoofer connection.

cheers guys
yeh you are right about the bass speaker, it doesnt have a power supply of its own. guessing i'll need to buy an active one if decide to go down that route?
have seen a few onkyo ones on numerous sites, and they do seem to get good comments. thanx for the pointers guys.
also, another thing that is confusing me is ohms! my speakers are rated at 3ohms for the front and rear speakers and 6ohms for the centre - will i kill anything if i plug these in to an amp that is rated at 4 or 8?

Dandy, on the sub question. YES.. is my answer for total accurate reproduction, BUT its not totally needed if your centre / front speakers can do the bass and your amp can 'instruct' this as so. Ohms, the less ohms a speaker has, the easier it is for the amp to power it, so it should not be a problem

oh, not to mention it sounds FRICKIN AMAZING!!!!
i bought a 42" toshiba regza a coupla weeks ago - very nice well pleased with it but comet had the 46" for the same amount it cost me for the 42". woulda gone for it but a) they didnt have any in and i wanted it NOW! and b) just as well as it woulda been too big for where it ended up in the living room!

Dandy, sounds like you have the right equipment putting a smile on your face makes a hell of a difference to the games a decent screen and sound system. I'm still undecided on my TV...really want a 46" LCD...kind'a tight squeeze = commen sense says 42"...boy in me says 46"
