Okay, Paul has an ibm thinkpad t41 running windows xp, upto and including all latest windows updates.
Unfortunately he had allowed a few programs to be installed on his pc, and a whole load of conflicting codec packs.
I un-installed loads of rubbish using add and remove, then started in safe mode and ran both an anti virus and spyware scan, all returned clean.
The stuff i removed didn't appear to be anything malicious, bbc iplayer/weather toolbar/yahoo toolbar/ bs player/ xp codec pack/ and two other codec packs.
The problem i'm having now, is that allthough the pc boots fine and fast, both the start button and the task bar are not clickable, and their icons don't change when i hover over them.
Strangely enough, if i press control/alt/delete, and start the task manager, everything starts working in seconds! and carries on as normal until next restart, when the cycle starts again.
At first i though something might have been left behind in the registry causing this, but after using both avanquest system suite 9 and ccleaner, te registry is reported to be fine.
So then i used sfc /scannow, and it asks for windows disk which i put in, so i assume it is copying over files. However on a reboot the problem still persists.
Can any of you techy people offer any help to removing this problem? Because while it's not the end of the world. It's really starting to bug me, I've not seen anything like this before, although i have been using/repairing pc's for decades
