Well as I get paid 4 weekly, and pay my bills monthly, I've keept on top of it all this year, and so my 13th wageslip (due in 8 weeks) is ALL MINE!! mwahaha
So I've already spent it, naturally, thanks to my friendly Virgin Credit Card (not so friendly at 29.9% APR). I've only gone and bought myself a brand spanking new PC!
So I'll be looking for some nice shiny new games on it. FPS are my forte, although I am fond of some RPGs (Warcraft 3 and Dawn of War being favourites). I've been out of the PC market for some time, so don't follow what games are out or coming out. Any ideas?
I'll be getting Crysis, and hope my PC will handle it...
Pentium Core 2 Quad 2.83Ghz 8GB DDR2 800 RAM 2x SLI GeForce 9800GTX+ 512mb 1TB HDD
My oh my I'm excited... I hope they deliver it before I have to go back to work next Tuesday!

I don't think you'll have any trouble running any games at full res with everything turned up to high with that set-up m8; should storm through them all.

Thats what I was hoping - I last built a PC in 2003, and had to upgrade a few times to keep up, but now its pretty much had it - it has AGP graphics, so the highest my graphics could go is a 512mb geforce 7950. The power supply's gone too, so random crashes and reboots galore, and although it could play newish games like stalker on good settings, the psu would fail, garble the screen, and lock up... So I learnt my lesson and went for the best I could afford this time. Quad core and 8 GB of RAM should last some time, and it'll help me cos I do a lot of design work. The only thing I think I might need to upgrade any time soon is the graphics cards, but should get a while out of them, as there's two of them! My display does 160x1050 too, so it should definitely handle high settings. I got it from Ginger 6, www.ginger6.co.uk, saw them in Games TM and after looking at Dell and Cyber Power as alternatives, this was the best price to performance option, at £1,069 including delivery. Thats cheaper than Dell, even though Dell were offering £50 off in October, and I get a 7% discount on Dell through the Mrs' work. So anyway, back to my main question - what good games are out/coming out on PC? At the moment I'm just excited to play Doom 3 on Ultra High settings, and actually play STALKER that I've owned for a year and not played. I might even get back to WoW too. Oh dear the Mrs won't be happy at all.

wow thats a very nice rig indeed! ive just put one together myself but on a strict budget of £50!!!! lol. when you decide that those graphics cards need ousting drop me a line as i'd be interested to take one off your hands. stuck with a 7300gt and although its not bad for what it cost, it cries if i try and play stalker!
as for games, i dont really know. except for crysis, and stalker clear skies and the usual plethora of mmo's there doesnt seem to be a lot out right now thats exclusive to pc.
i only really built mine to play some the older games i still have like the IL-2 sturmovik and Battle of Britain: Wings of Victory sims, Vampire: the Masquerade Bloodlines n stuff like that.

My gaming rig is still an AGP card - Sapphire make ATI AGP flavours that blow the old NVidia 7series out of the water. Mine has a HD2600XT in it and runs everything I've thrown at it in 1280x800 high settings (apparently equivalent to an 8800+NV). As for good games for PC, LEFT 4 DEAD next month mate! I'm buying it on Steam and getting the 360 version. If you can grab Quake Wars cheap on PC, well worth it - hugely active gaming community for it online. TF2 is fun on PC too, I prefer the "poosh leetel kart" levels with my heavy but the others can be fun too. FC2 multiplayer is a bit cack at the moment, maybe they'll fix it who knows? I'd steer clear of it in the meantime unless you only want it for the SP game. Start grabbing PC ZONE if you want a decent reviews mag that doesn't give out scores based on the amount of advertising revenue received, like some other PC mags...

I subscribe to Games TM, which does seem to have very impartial reviews, but being multi format they only mention certain special PC games. I don't think I'll be getting FC2 on PC, I have it on Xbox 360 and although I waste plenty money on games, I don't really wanna buy a game twice! Which is why I'll also be buying Left 4 Dead on Xbox 360.
I'll certainly be buying Crysis, I might get it when I go food shopping in a few minutes. I've heard and read wonderful things about the SP game, and hey I wouldn't have said this 10 years ago, but these days there's certainly nothing wrong with a bit of eye candy either!
Dandy, is your PC AGP or PCI-e? I have an AGP 512mb geforce 7950GT to get rid of when I dismantle my old PC, also a PCI 1.0 Creative XFi Fatal1ty soundcard plus front expansion bay.

I've just built my PC recently to experience different games.
STALKER I enjoyed this game very much. A bit rough around the edges but you won't have experienced anything quite like it. I spent a whole day at home once playing this when I was supposed to be at work. Drew the curtains, turned the speakers up and sat at the PC all f***ing day! Excellent!
The Witcher Enhanced Edition Supposed to be great RPG. I've just got this from Amazon for £17.99. GAME wanted £35!
Enemy Territory: Quake Wars Good online multiplayer game. Very cheap from Amazon at £5.50

World of Goo is one game I've been playing lately on the PC that is absolute class. Any PC pretty much will run it though!! Crysis is great and with that rig - get those details up high.

its pci-e (although i didnt shell out a fortune on my pc i made sure it was relatively future proof!). thanx for the offer. how much would you want for the X-fi? thanx for the heads up on the hd2600 xt rabin - checked out a couple of reviews and it seems its something of a little stonker - and aria sell em for £35 so i may decide to bag one of those - although i can also get a 1950 pro for £50 ish or gf6800xt for £22! what to do? then of course i wanna get fallout3...oh lordy

I'll have a think about the XFi, it depends if its going to fit in the new machine or not. I suspect not - on the upgrades page they only allow you to add one PCI item, and I've had to go with a WiFi card, cos the router's too far from the computer for a cable.
As for your graphics cards, I wouldn't bother with the 6800XT. Its a good card, and in terms of features better than your 7300GT but probably not any faster in your system. I've heard good things about the hd2600 elsewhere... I suppose ultimately it depends on your budget, but spend all you can! Or just get FO3 on Xbox instead, and know it'll work.

cant really justify spending £££'s on pc parts right now, as much i would like to! aside from stalker, my modest rig (athlon 64 x2 3800) runs the games i have with eye candy turned right up so i cant really complain too much. just read the recommended specs for fallout3 and a 3d card upgrade is basically the only thing id have to consider - the upside of it being launched on consoles aswell is the demands on hardware wont be so high. id have to turn the detail and res right down with the 7300gt though.
i cant believe youve only got room for one pci card though - even on an sli board i thought yould get 2 slots - what model is the mobo?

Asus P5N-D. It has 2 PCI-e 1x, 2 PCI-e 16x and 2 PCI. One of the PCI- 1x is covered by one graphics card, and one PCI is covered by the other as they're dual slot cards.
All thats available is the bottom PCI slot (taken by a wifi adapter) and the top-most PCI-e 1x slot, which I probably won't use just yet, as I have nothing to put in it!
I'll have to strip out the old one and get some anti-static bags and stick them on eBay I think!
