I'm stuck, just been into town today for a new LCD TV and I'm sooooo tempted to add a PS3 to the ever-growing pile of boxes in the front room. Thing is, I only want it for Gran Turismo. Not so bothered about the Bluray playback capability as I also bought a Sony upscaling dvd player and Bluray films are, in my eyes, expensive. So, near enough £300 to play one game. I realise people build pc's for one game (heck, I did for Crysis-upgraded anyway). I'm just having trouble justifying it. But I really really want to dabble at GT Prologue. What would you do?

If you have the cash - do it - life is too short to be worrying about it - GT5 is great to look at, but not as good a sim as Forza2. Metal Gear Solid is amazing!!!!!! If you have a HD display - it is definately worth investing in ps3 for bluray - it's not better than HD was but at least the Films are coming out on bluray!!

Tricky! I was all geared up to get one for the sake of Tekken, Wipeout and Motorstorn as all the other titles I have played on it have been a big let-down(MGS is class but not my cup of tea and Drake's Fortune/Heavenly sword are comparible to Tomb Raider and DMC4 etc so not missing much), but Tekken is coming next year and PURE has been released so me buying a £300 system to play one 'arcade' game would a total waste. Add to that IMO the controllers aren't as good as the xbox's, I could'nt put the thing in my rucksack and take it to my mates as it's massive and the live services are still a shambles(although that could change with the home service) and the case for getting one does'nt look too good...but...I would still get one.
I went with the dreamcast when everyone said it was going to die a death and loved the thing, I bought an N64 just for Starwars Racer(before the DC one) and you never know what sony is going to come up with...Killzone 2 has been the best looking 1st person shooter I have seen on any system this year. Also as you don't pay for the live services I don't know if you will get certain stuff free? My case in point would be with this years FIFA charging you £10-£15(?) in ms points for a live league and updates, I don't know if you may get this kind of thing for the lovely sum of nowt?
It's always nice to have a change/option when it comes to games and gaming and although BluRay stuff is expensive now it will be as cheap as dvd's in the next few year.

a couple of years ago i woulda said go for it, but in these modern times, i cant really see the point in owning both. with tekken now moving onto 360 the last great bastion of the triple-a system exclusive has gone. if you were coming into this generation of consoles now, i would say that although expensive, the ps3 is better value for your cash - blu-ray, internet browser plus all the media gumpf, and prolly a more reliable product but if you already own a 360 just invest £300 in the great new games being released instead.
failing that, just wait until GT5 actually gets released cos prices may have dropped a little by then. but to be honest, what will GT5 offer that the previous four didnt, asides online play?
oh god...i sound like a 360 fanboy!!! go buy a PS3!!!!! competition is healthy! ;D

Thanks for taking the time to respond! very much appreciated. I decided not to go for it (yes Farto, it's your fault ). Going to wait until the Christmas rush as it's only a couple of months away now, and see if prices drop and like you say GT 5 isn't out yet. Besides, I've also sniffed out a nice 7.1 amp and some mission speakers for the sound for the tv. After all that the missus is looking a bit grumpy... Thanks again!

er...ahem...sorry ;D it really isnt like me to preach caution when it comes to games related paraphenalia! the other thing ive noticed about the ps3 is that it never drops in price only gets a fatter HDD every 6 months so i wouldnt hold out for a price drop. although i reckon that if it doesnt sell well over xmas then sony may eventually knock a tenner off it! ;D ;D i have issues with sony and ps3 cos they fleeced us europeans silly with it from the start - a) by removing the hardware backwards compatability and b) by removing it completely from subsequent models. i know, i know - keep your ps2 i hear you all cry. but its the principle of the thing! especially when we pay so much over the odds than our pacific and atlantic based cousins. er...rant over.

Not every original XBox game plays on the 360 either so it's not just Sony that annoyed it's customers.

agreed but then microsoft never really pretended otherwise, whereas the original model ps3 had dedicated hardware for playin older ps games and then had it ripped out cos people were still buying ps2 games when there wasnt any ps3 games worth playing.
i mean, the ps3 is a nice piece of kit, dont get me wrong, but until the price drops substantially then there is no chance of me even being able to think about affording one. and as i mentioned before, for me the only reason to own one would be for blu-ray because ive seen nothin on ps3 that i cant get on 360 or thats a good enough exclusive to tempt me to buy a ps3.
and backwards compatibility, or lack of, is really the least of the 360's problems!!! ;D ;D ;D
