Hi folks, After months without a problem I now find I have no internet connection. I have a BT Home Hub which my laptop and Xbox connect wirelessly and my lads Xbox is wired. Switched on yesterday and coundn't connect to the internet (said local access only). Reset the hub and now it says the network is unidentified. Tried setting up a new network and my hub is visible and I can connect to it but still only offers local access and no internet. All the lights on the hub are on and have even tried to connect with an ethernet cable with the same result. Consequently neither Xbox will connect on-line. Any of you boffins out there have any suggestions?

With most of them you can do a test which checks for various issues? Clutching at straws really I guess...

Dunno if your PC is Vista based, but wonder if the bottom of this post helps help.lockergnome.com/vista/DOA-Unidentified-Network-Access-Local-ftopict22152.html

Hi Rogue, thanks for that. Yes it is vista based so it may be one of the issues mentioned. I now have to pluck up the courage to start tinkering with things I really don't understand.

Hi Rogue, thanks for that. Yes it is vista based so it may be one of the issues mentioned. I now have to pluck up the courage to start tinkering with things I really don't understand. It seems if you google "unidentified network" there are loads of people having issues with Vista. That weblink I provided you at the bottom looks like fairly straightforward things to try. I guess you can't make it any worse if you do -> I'd just write down the settings before you make any changes and just do things one step at a time and if it doesn't help you can just go back to where you started. But it definitely seems Vista is very skilled at screwing up hubs and routers. If you want, send me a PM and I'll send you my mobile number and you can call me later and talk it through on't phone so to speak. I'm not saying I am an expert at this - but problem shared and all that...

I am planning on trying to sort this out tonight and I hope I won't need to bother you. But it would be a big comfort to know that someone who's a bit more savvy about these things was on the end of the phone, just in case I totally screw things up. ;D

As the wired Xbox can't connect to Live, it suggests your Hub isn't connecting to BT. The Hub's 'Connection Status' page should confirm whether this is the case.
If you're not connecting to BT it could be a problem at their end or the line.
If you are, the Hub may be screwed up / developed a fault therefore it might be worth trying a factory reset and re-enter your username & password.

w00t ;D I'm back in the land of the living ;D Tried most things last night without success, so decided to stay at home today and ring BT helpline (which I'm most impressed is now free). Was on the phone for two hours to a very pleasant chap in India who managed to track down the problem. Apparently the router was stuck with a static IP address and was looking in the wrong place (I think that was the gist of what he said ) Anyhoo after much switching on and off, resetting this, configuring that I have now got myself back on-line. Many thanks to you all for your suggestions/advise.

It would appear that I may have w00ted to early After getting it sorted yesterday I played on-line for at least a couple of hours (Bad Company) with a bunch of randoms with no problems at all. Having switched on again last night to join the COD2 fest, I couldn't get on-line initially. Test connection revealed I had lost the internet again, however turned router on/off and tried again. Finally got into a game after a very long screen load only to end up with connection errors constantly throughout the 10 mins I stayed in the game (constantly jumping around making it un-playable). Anyhoo over a number of resets I had every every network connection test fail at one point or another from not connected to network, no ISP, MTU fail, Live not connected and strict NAT. I finally managed to get back into a game later on and as it finished it appeared I had a ping rate of 999 . Needless to say I called it a night at that so my apologies if I disappeared rather abruptly but I was getting pretty P'ed off at that point.

You had lots of lag when you were in, and as you saw 999ms ping which i guess is the maximum it could display so it may have been even higher and your audio was all broken up. I wonder if your hub/router has gone faulty.... maybe time for a replacement?
