Hi All.. I just bought a MYWorld network hard drive. It comes with software to allow you to acess the files on it from anywhere (via internet)using the relevant software with the Home PC off. Haven't tried that bit yet.
What i thought i was getting was a network hard drive that i could store all my videos on and watch them on my 360 in the other room with the Home PC off...
Does anybody know what i'm talking about? and if you do can you offer some advice?
I have heard the term UPnp but i don't think the Mybook has this.
Cheers in advance
;D

Alright Metshaz, The only way I've managed to stream music / video / pictures over my home network to my 360 is to have all the data on a PC with the PC running Windows Media Player 11 (Windows Media Player 11 has built in Windows Media Connect Software that shares your library with a compatible device i.e the 360). I used to have limited success with MS Windows Media Connect which was a standalone utility that run on XP but it was a bit flaky. I think that's why they brought out Windows Media Player 11 and built it in (with some fixes). Can you connect the new drive to your 360 via USB like a standard external drive? You could then setup a network drive from your PC so your PC can transfer files to / from the new drive. Has the new drive got an operating system? I suppose it must have something as it sets up a connection to / from the internet. It may have it's own utility so it can be setup as a media server / sharer thingy. I wouldn't be surprised if the 360 only likes to connect to MS media sharing products (it used to only work with XP Media Centre until they built in the feature to Windows Media Player 11). Is this the model? www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=340This one doesn't look like you can connect it to your 360 via USB. Apparently the USB on the drive is just for adding extra drives to the system (might be wrong on that). I found this forum where the user was trying to do the same as you: forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/883644.htmlLooks like the media sharing is the problem. The forum linked to this device that has media sharing built in so you don't need a PC as well: www.dlink.com/products/?pid=509Reading the bottom of the forum it looks like you can hack the drive but apparently you need some basic Linux skills to get it working with media sharing and some filename renaming as well! I read somewhere that you have to use Twonky software with the drives to get the sharing working but some people reported loss of sound sometimes. Here is another drive: www.amazon.co.uk/Maxtor-Shared-Storage-II-Ethernet/dp/B000IFRSXO/ref=pd_sbs_ce?ie=UTF8&qid=1206616209&sr=8-2With a discussion here: www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?p=6604832Aarrgh!

You can use the methods above (Which I do) for streaming from your pc to xbox etc.
The method I use to allow PC/Xbox + anything else to access my Weston Digital Mass HDD and stream music, videos pictures etc (and Internet radio)is the Linksys NSLU2UK (Slug) flashed and running Twonkey media sitting between HDD Internet and pc/connecting device (can include PS3)
(Flashing the Slug is easy to do) Flashing will remove the warranty of the Slug and in some circles is frowned upon. Linksys do not recommend this, but on their website acknowledge that this can be done(and has been done successfully) by a large community and sort of use it as a selling point.
There is a small (Euro) fee to have a license to run twonkey, yet you can have 3 or 4 slugs on one key, thus I went halves with a friend and it was about £15 (You can get a trial)
This may seem expensive, yet for me it's a perfect solution. I can access the HDD remotely (playing music at work from my own library of Albums) total access through the house, and I can set up a VPN with friend and update each others HDD with latest music content (abit like P2P)

Wow, thanks for quick replies. Weeeelllllll I took that one back to pc world and they kindly gave me my money back. (there customer service seems to have worked out that a happy customer is a returning one ) All i wanted was a hard drive that could be accesed by all my devices (including 360 and laptops) without having the main pc on The main problem with the Mybook, apart from the fact that the 360 doesn't like it (not upnp) was that they advertise that you can access your files anywhere in the world....What they sneakily don't make clear is anything with a media extension can't be shared or used...so it was basically only good as a backup drive, and i already have one of those. I also saw the threads on hacking the drive, however whilst very pc savy, i don't understand linux and wanted an "out of the box" solution So i have now ordered this ebay item 150229954552 I think this will do the job As for Twonkey, yes i found it, but also a program called tversity which seems to do the same for free...i think it actually allows you to more with the 360 such as look at Youtube on it too...It also transcodes on the fly... I think you would need a failry fast pc to do this, but i'm covered on that on. i just bought a Quad Core pc But another question springs to mind, i assume that either of these programs need to be installed to the PC, and therefore in order to use them pc must be on...Not the end of the world, but there you go.... As i'm still setting up new pc it may be a few days untili can report back any news. I must admit i'm quite shocked by how good the media side of the 360 is, when linked to a pc...I just downloaded the whole series of Ross Kemp in HD and streamed it through to HD TV in spare room, and it all just worked Cheers Sharon

Mmm interesting posts.
I'm not really PC savvy at all and was wondering if anyone could answer this for me please?
I have just ordered a Western Digital Mybook II 500gb usb drive and want to transfer all my media files to it. I use WMP11 without any issues at the moment sharing from my PC's internal drive but I'm sure for the 360 to find the files they had to be placed in the Shared Documents folder.
Is that right or is it that all I need to do is right click the applicable folder on my swanky new hard drive and allow sharing in Properties?
Thanks in advance

These things can be a pain! You shouldn't need the PC on as it should operate as a media sharer by itself on the network visible to the 360. When the PC is on the PC should see the drive as a standard network drive for storing the files on. I can't say that it will do everything you want it to because I haven't used that exact device. I've only done it with a PC.

Thanks in advance I think with your PC on it will see it as a standard network drive for dumping all your files on. You have to go into WMP11 and specify the folder you keep your files in and the folders you want to share to other devices (360). The 360 will connect to WMP11 and therefore access the specified shared folders. With your PC off the drive will not be visible to the 360 unless you do some fiddling (see earlier post). I can't tell you it will definitely work as I don't have direct experience of the device, only what I know and have read.

I f you just want to stream your movies, music etc through your 360 you can just conect a usb external HDD straight to it. Thats what I do and it works pretty sweet....Dunno if that helps at all?? :s

Is the 360 reading straight from the HDD?
Mine is reading from a HDD but am using Twonkey to allow 'communication' without having a pc on + I can stream shoutcast etc and connect up to other devices.

Sorry I've been quiet, went into PC world and saw, a managers special PC, so amazingly, i offered £100 less than managers special price, and he said yes, so i bought a new monitor too....LOL
So i was busy, setting that up, THEN i got a bloody virus, that i couldn't shake off (of PC variety) it stopped my antivirus from updating. Well as i only the pc for a few days, not too much damage done, but been re-installing everything again.
Well i got my drive, but much to my dissapointment it said on the box 360 photo and music sharing only. i installed Twonkey on it, but i couldn't set it to find the files on the NAS, so everytime i turned pc off, the file sharing stopped...
So i had a look at tversity, it appears on first use to be more user friendly and has some nice options, it also "sees, and, shares" the files on my NAS.
the downside of course is pc needs to be on, but i was in that position with twonky anyway. The good points are it enables you to add feeds and urls to the 360, you can also watch YOUTube on the 360 !
Perhaps when i have some more money, and media serving software and eqiupment has moved on a bit then i shall delve into it some more...
PS Anybody on here use tversity, that can guide me into setting up the URL stuuf

Glad you have managed to sort your (PC) virus problems.
Can Tversity not be installed and run from your NAS? Thus PC 'Has to be on' option is removed, and you can continue to share files. (not sure how big a memory footprint this would need) thats if having the PC on is a problem.
Currently with Twonkey I have the ability to watch, share listen to pretty much anything through the 360, (Twonkey will transcode) it has vtuner as well, but I don't really use this.
Is your NAS on a static ip? I can only think that maybe its on a dynamic IP, thus twonkey could not see the files? (Also if you have a static ISP IP, you can log on from the Internet and pull files from your NAS, or Save to it from a friends say)
Not sure on the URL jobbie, in Twonkey you just plug it onto the NAS. (EG internet music station you like in winamp, pluck URL out, and save in NAS in Music folder, twoney acts as a proxy and treats it as a never ending lolcal cd)
Interested in Goth1K set up, as this sounds like he is running the NAS with media server inbuilt

Maxx No NAS setup here guy, just a plain ol' 250G Buffalo external (SATA)HDD connected thru USB on 360...I used to stream via TVersity and maybe it somehow stored codecs on the 360 itself, not sure if that is poss tho??? Got it working on both premium and arcade/core systems!! I'll try get some pics or short vids to send you. Changed External to WDElements 500G earlier and still works fine..
